Bio:

Alma Joy, 35, was a laundress from Savannah, Georgia, known for her strong work ethic and dedication to her family. She spent long hours washing and ironing clothes for wealthy families in the Historic District, determined to create a better life for her children.

Residing in Carver Heights, Alma faced the racial inequalities of the South while building a supportive community. In 1898, a local African American photographer captured her portrait to celebrate the opening of a church school with her son Jason.

Available in 5x7 and 8x10  prints. Download this image to print it from your own printer.

Each photo was generated using data and source pictures from the library of congress, other historical archives, and edited in Photoshop.
